COLLEGE PARK, Md. – It was a day of celebration at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism as 144 undergraduate and graduate degrees were conferred during ceremonies in the Dekelboum Concert Hall at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.
A packed house of family and friends looked on as Dean Lucy Dalglish presided over the event. ABC News Senior Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas gave the commencement address, telling the graduates, “What we do is powerful — it can and does matter.”
Nearly 150 viewers watched a stream of the program, produced by UMTV, the Merrill College’s cable TV station:
UMTV will also rebroadcast the ceremony (as well as the Main Commencement event that featured former Baltimore Oriole great Cal Ripken, Jr.) over the course of the next few weeks.
The ceremony included a number of awards:
MDDC Press Association Outstanding News-Editorial Senior Award: Connor Letourneau Outstanding Broadcast News Senior Award: Joshua Fendrick Outstanding Multimedia News Senior Awards: Gregory Kohn and Elizabeth McLellan.
The award for Outstanding Service to the Merrill College went to Joshua Fendrick.
Ten Merrill Journalists were given the Kappa Tau Alpha Award for Outstanding Academic Accomplishment and eleven were recognized for their volunteer service to the Merrill College.
