Philip Merrill College of Journalism students won 37 awards, including a remarkable 16 first-place finishes, in Region 2 of the Society of Professional Journalists 2009 Mark of Excellence contest on March 28.
The University of Maryland graduate and undergraduate students won in print, broadcast and online competitions against schools from Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Virginia and North Carolina.
Winning entries included work from student-run media such as the independent daily newspaper, The Diamondback, and from college-run media, including Capital News Service, the radio show Terp Weekly Edition, the TV sports show Terrapin Timeout, the nightly news show Maryland Newsline and the online news magazine, also called Maryland Newsline.
First-place winners in the regional competition advance to the next round of judging, where national winners will be selected from the more than 3,600 entries in 39 categories across SPJ’s 12 regions this year. National winners will be announced in mid-May.

Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. The University of Maryland’s student chapter of SPJ is regularly recognized as one of the best in the country.
