Students land SPJ honors in print, broadcast and online

Philip Merrill College of Journalism students won 37 awards, including a remarkable 16 first-place finishes, in Region 2 of the Society of Professional Journalists 2009 Mark of Excellence contest on March 28.

The University of Maryland graduate and undergraduate students won in print, broadcast and online competitions against schools from Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Virginia and North Carolina.

Winning entries included work from student-run media such as the independent daily newspaper, The Diamondback, and from college-run media, including Capital News Service, the radio show Terp Weekly Edition, the TV sports show Terrapin Timeout, the nightly news show Maryland Newsline and the online news magazine, also called Maryland Newsline.

First-place winners in the regional competition advance to the next round of judging, where national winners will be selected from the more than 3,600 entries in 39 categories across SPJ’s 12 regions this year. National winners will be announced in mid-May.

Maryland’s Region 2 award-winners were:

  • Breaking News Reporting: First place, Kyle Goon, The Diamondback, “Three men force their way into apartment.”
  • General News Reporting: First place, Ashley Lewis, Capital News Service, “State Police Spying.”
  • Feature Writing: Second place, Aaron Kraut, The Diamondback, “From Baghdad to the bullpen.”
  • Editorial Cartooning: First place, Michael O’Brien, The Diamondback.
  • Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper (published at least 4 times per week): First place, The Diamondback.
  • Breaking News Photography: First place, Adam Fried, Jaclyn Borowski and James B. Hale, The Diamondback.
  • General News Photography: Third place, Adam Fried and James B. Hale, The Diamondback, “Virtuous patience.”
  • Photo Illustration: Third place, Jaclyn Borowski and Sam Stone, The Diamondback, “Porn addiction.”
  • Sports Photography: First place, Adam Fried, The Diamondback, “Waking up”; second place, Jaclyn Borowski, The Diamondback, “Terps can’t complete comeback at BC.”
  • Radio News Reporting: First Place, Amanda Gaines, Terp Weekly Edition, “Election Night 2008”

  • Radio In-Depth Reporting: First place, staff, Terp Weekly Edition, Spring 2008, “Special Report: Out of the shadows.”
  • Radio Sports Reporting: First place, Kyle Patton, Terp Weekly Edition, “Club Rugby”; third place, Scott Kaptur, Terp Weekly Edition“Pro Day.”
  • Radio Newscast: Second place: Staff, Terp Weekly Edition.

  • Television General News Reporting: Third place, John Wist, Maryland Newsline/UMTV, “Green Tailgating.”
  • Television Feature: First place, Cassandra Wilson, Maryland Newsline/UMTV, “At the barbershop”; second place, Samia Badih, Maryland Newsline/UMTV, “Walter Reed rehab.”
  • Television Sports Reporting: Second place, Nick Verderame, Terrapin Timeout, “Women’s Crew”; third place, Mike Beckerman, Terrapin Timeout, “Boxing.”

    Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. The University of Maryland’s student chapter of SPJ is regularly recognized as one of the best in the country.
