Bethany Swain, a former CNN photojournalist who was the first woman to win the White House News Photographers Association “Video Photographer of the Year Award,” has joined the Merrill College faculty.

Swain, who won the video photographer of the year award in 2010, is a lecturer at the Merrill College, teaching broadcast and multimedia reporting and editing.

In 2012, Swain’s work was again honored in the “documentary photography” category of the National Press Photographers Association’s “Best of Photojournalism” contest.

Swain has used her ties to CNN, the National Press Photographers Association and the White House News Photographers Association to give her students special access to some of the country’s best reporters and editors.

Earlier this year, she took her students to CNN’s Washington Bureau to watch the production of “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.”  The students spoke with editors from CNN’s long-form and daily news units and met with Washington bureau chief Sam Fiest and corresponent Tom Foreman.

She also brought her students to the White House News Photographers Association’s annual contest judging in Washington, where the students watched some of the best photojournalists and photo editors in the country critique contest entries.
