Merrill SPJ Chapter Donates in Memory of Penny Bender Fuchs

The Merrill College of Journalism’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists recently presented a check for $645 to the Shepherd’s Table in Silver Spring  in memory of former Associate Dean Penny Bender Fuchs, who died in September after battling breast cancer for a number of years.

Presentation of the check to Shepherd’s Table executive director Jackie Coyle (center) was made by chapter co-president Brandon Goldner and chapter social media chair Emily Schweich.

The chapter raised the money by selling yellow bracelets for $5 with the inscription, “WWPD,” which stood for “What Would Penny Do.”  The bracelets were sold to students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends.  The chapter covered the cost of the bracelets so that all of proceeds would be donated to the charity, which was one of Penny’s favorites.

Presentation of the check to Shepherd’s Table executive director Jackie Coyle was made by chapter co-president Brandon Goldner and chapter social media chair Emily Schweich on November 20.
