Knight Hall Dedication Activities
The Merrill College dedicated the new John S. and James L. Knight Hall on Wednesday, April 21, 2010. Merrill faculty, alumni and newsmakers kicked off the day with panel discussions about the future of local news, media consumption by young adults and digital media technology. Later in the day, we officially cut the ribbon on Knight Hall following a ceremony led by Connie Chung (Merrill Class of '69). The ceremony featured speeches by University of Maryland, College Park President C.D. "Dan" Mote, Jr., Merrill College Dean Kevin Klose, Washingtonian Publisher Cathy Merrill Williams, Knight Foundation Vice President Gary Kebbel and Merrill College student Steven Overly. Reinventing Local News: Panel Discussion with News Entrepreneurs - Merrill College's Knight Professor of Digital Innovation Leslie Walker and Asher Epstein, managing director of the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, co-hosted a panel that grew out of the class they co-teach at Merrill, New Media Entrepreneurship.
The panel was moderated by Jeff Salkin, news anchor, Maryland Public Television, and featured Jim Brady, President, Digital Strategy, Allbritton Communications, Mark Potts, founder and CEO, GrowthSpur and Fern Shen, founder and publisher, Baltimore Brew.
Addicted to Media - Dr. Susan Moeller of the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism and a panel of undergraduate and graduate students discuss two studies. The first looks at media coverage of the Islamic world. The second looks at media consumption by students at the University of Maryland.
Jay Kernis on the Front Lines of Journalism - Jay Kernis, managing editor of CNN/US, discusses his long career in radio and television and the future of news. Kernis, a 1974 graduate of the Merrill College, is a member of the college Board of Visitors.
