Staff at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism are integral in ensuring the smooth operation of the college's many programs and services. They are experts in business operations, student services, advising and program management.
Emily Hartz
Assistant Dean, Business Operations
After earning her bachelor's degree in Economics at the University of Maryland, College Park, Ms. Hartz came to work for the University as an academic advisor. In 2004, she accepted the Director of Administrative Services position in the Department of Economics. She was subsiquently presented with the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences' Outstanding Staff Award. Prior to her transfer to the Philip Merrill School of Journalism, Ms. Hartz completed the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers' (SACUBO's) College Business Management Institute training program and the ORAA Certification Program, a comprehensive sponsored projects training program, designed and administered by the University's Offices of Contract and Grant Accounting and Research Administration and Advancement. Ms Hartz is an active member of the National Council of University Research Administrators and is dedicated to managing Merrill's funding ethically and efficiently to aid the College in its pursuit of excellence.
Anne Martens
Assistant Dean, External Relations
As senior development officer, Martens provides strategic direction for the College’s development and alumni relations programs, secures support for present and future needs, and staffs the Board of Visitors.
Prior to joining Merrill College, Martens held senior advancement positions at the University of Pennsylvania and The College of New Jersey, as well as administrative positions in the non-profit sector. A native of Michigan, Martens holds an MSS in Social Policy and Program Development from Bryn Mawr College, and a BSW from Western Michigan University.
